Presentation 1: Creative Dance Assessment

Our first dance assessment piece saw us given the task of creating a creative dance using the topic of 'The World Around Us'. My group consisted of myself, Marcel and Greg. After some brief brainstorming of ideas, it was put forward to use the idea of a life cycle. We slowly narrowed it down to something that could be portrayed simply, but efficiently through dance and something that would give us a range of techniques to work with. Weith these aspects put in place we decided that the life of a bird would work really well. A song that came instantly to mind was the Foo Fighters ''Learn to Fly' as the music and lyrics went hand in hand with how we wanted the choreography to work. The song starts off slow, this allowing Marcel to start the dance as an adult bird, loosely based on that of an eagle. We tried to portray Marcel as one by shadowing behind him as he flys to a makeshift nest that we made using a brown sheet rolled and placed in a semi-circle. Marcel lays the 'eggs'; this being Greg and myself and Marcel soars around the dance space collecting food, while we break out of our eggs, showing the struggle of a newborn in the wild. Marcel comes back to feed us and eventually as the song ramps up its intensity, the chicks try to learn to fly. One chick after some frantic flapping is successful, the other is not. Chairs were used to elevate Greg and myself so as to give the appearence of a drop from the tree or nest. The successful chick and mother bird help the struggling chick back to the nest and as the mother and chick soars around, the other chick tries to find its wings. Eventually with several tries the bird is successful and all three birds soar and dive in succession. Towards the end of the song the lyrics state ' Fly along with me I can't quite make it alone.........Make my way back home when I learn to fly'. As the song dies off towards its conclusion, all three birds nestle up and tuck their beaks under their wings.
Due to a technical error, our dance was filmed but lost by the person filming and as such we do not have a representation of our dance. Instead I have provided the resources used for inspiration to create our dance below:
